Ivan's Story

When I first heard about Camille, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of her. She seemed a little stubborn, a little too curious—asking endless questions about the school she was preparing to attend, and I was just finishing—and I honestly wrote her off as stuck-up and maybe even a little annoying. But all of that changed the day we met in person at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

In an instant, the “stubbornness” became unmistakable tenacity, and the “annoyance” revealed itself as genuine eagerness. I was captivated. I couldn’t help but invite Camille to a few of our class cookouts, hoping to spend just a little more time with the woman who had surprised me in the best way.

Camille, on the other hand, had no plans to start a long-term relationship—especially not a long-distance one. But somehow, I managed to convince her to take a chance on us. Our relationship grew across miles, with me in Melbourne, Florida, and Camille in Chicago. Even after I eventually moved to Illinois, duty called, and I was deployed to the Middle East, and even after coming back, civilian work life made me move to Maryland.

Through every challenge—distance, moves, and time zones—our love stayed steady. Before long, all the traveling became something we did together. From Hawaii to Mexico, the Virgin Islands to countless states across the country, we built memories side by side, proving time and time again that we are strongest as a team.

Now, after every detour and every adventure, we’re ready for the greatest journey yet: marriage. I’m endlessly grateful for the path that brought us together, and even more excited for the lifetime ahead.

Camille's Story

Oh boy, where do I begin?

Ivan and I met in the most unconventional way—through the Army. At first, our interactions were minimal and innocent. It was simply a girl getting free stuff from a boy who was leaving Fort Leonard Wood after graduating from Engineer Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC). Little did I know that his free griddle would be the start of something much bigger.

Engineer BOLC was one of the hardest and most humbling experiences I've ever faced, and through it all, Ivan was there. I still remember having to complete a 12-mile ruck march—not once, but twice. Each time I crossed the finish line, there was a boy waiting to help take the weight off my shoulders, allowing me to unload my hardships, frustrations, and endless complaints onto him.

The Army has taken us on quite a journey. Between different training courses, a deployment to the Middle East, a mobilization to Tampa, Florida, and even a job relocation to Maryland, life has rarely stood still. Through every move, challenge, and period of uncertainty, we've continued to grow stronger together.

We are complete opposites in many ways, but somehow those differences make us whole. Ivan balances me, supports me, and reminds me that I never have to carry life's burdens alone.

Looking back, it's funny to think that it all started with a free griddle. Looking forward, I know that no matter where the Army—or life—takes us next, there's no one else I'd rather have by my side. I couldn't have picked a better partner to spend the rest of my life with, and I can't wait to begin this next chapter together.
